Billie Salter White

Billie Salter White paints the event rather than the emblem. Her florals descend from Dutch still life, but where that tradition used the perfect bloom as a warning about transience, hers are never permitted to fully form. The moment a flower settles, it becomes a symbol again. What she paints instead is the transition itself: arriving and leaving, dissolving and reforming, held in the same frame. The supporting architecture of the genre gives way — vases come apart, plinths turn out to be made of the same living matter as the flowers they were meant to hold. What the work is after is the charge in the passage, the invisible forces made briefly visible.

Billie has an MFA from Ohio State University and a BA in Critical Theory. She lives and works in Boulder, CO.
